Beginning Creative Writing
Stories come from all sorts of places,
including dreams, memories, or mysterious
places in our imagination. Turning these
sparks of inspiration into authentic writing
that engages, evokes, and entertains is a
process that takes equal parts dedication
and liberation. Through this course,
students will develop an original piece
of creative writing with guidance from
peers and instruction that focuses on
creating compelling characters, settings,
conflict, and an authentic narrative voice.
Course sessions will consist of lectures,
discussions, workshops, and writing
exercises. Instructor
Eric Erickson
earned
an MA in English and creative writing and
has published fiction in several literary
journals. He is currently nearing the
completion of his first novel.

Dipping Your Toe into
Creative Writing
Explore the craft of creative writing with
this taster class covering the basic tools
writers need to transform their ideas from
concept to the page. This one-session class
is ideal for new writers wanting an overview
of topics important to creative writing
and for intermediate writers looking for a
condensed refresher. The class incorporates
lecture with short writing exercises designed
to apply concepts. Topics include a basic
introduction to story and plot, narration
and point of view, as well as setting and
character. By the end of the class, writers
will not only be able to apply these basic
concepts to their writing, but also have
the resources and the direction for further
study either independently or in a formal
setting.
Rick Gustafson
developed this class
to share “the things he wished he’d known
about writing” early in his career. Rick has
an MLS from the University of Denver and
has won several writing awards for fiction
including the E.M Koeppel Short Fiction
prize in 2014. He is a weekly contributor
