Beginning Study in
Watercolor Technique
Begin a study of
watercolor painting
by exploring four
basic techniques:
brushwork, washes,
creating a range
of values and
color mixing. Plan
to complete a
painting in each of
the four meetings
focusing on these
techniques: (1) Sketching using a variety
of brushstrokes; (2) Landscape painting
with sky washes and foreground brush
strokes; (3) Monochromatic painting
exploring a range of values; and (4) Floral
painting with harmonious color scheme.
Students have ample time to practice each
technique before starting a painting. A
painting guide will be provided so students
can also work independently and apply
the same techniques to new paintings (or
apply the same concepts in other mediums
such as acrylics or oils). Discuss framing
and matting options and view samples.

Batik Watercolor Painting
In just a few hours, learn the fun process
of batik wax resist on rice paper to make
a gorgeous watercolor painting suitable
for framing. Batik is an ancient Indonesian
technique of layering wax to resist paint or
dyes. Start by tracing a prepared design
(there are many gorgeous ones to choose
from) and then learn how to layer the wax
and paint colors of your choice to build up
depth and color. Then iron out the wax and
voila! You have a gorgeous picture ready to
slip in a frame.
Lydia Rea and Mary Tharp
host the class. Lydia Rea has taught the
popular Bob Ross and Robert Warren design
painting classes at CFU for many years,
and Mary is also a painting teacher and
all-around crafting aficionado. The materials
fee covers paper, wax & misc materials.
