Assertiveness Training for
Everyone
Assertiveness is a core life skill. The
goal is to stand up for yourself and your
beliefs effectively while retaining respect
for others. We sometimes think that being
accommodating is the only way to be
nice and that standing up for ourselves is
mean. The truth is that when you suppress
your needs, you’re more likely to blurt
your feelings in thoughtless ways or to
act out your feelings indirectly. Besides
preventing others from taking advantage
of you, being your own advocate boosts
your self-esteem. Learn what the difference
is between assertiveness, aggressiveness,
and passivity. Discover a simple formula
for expressing yourself that you can adapt
to different situations. And, in a supportive
atmosphere, fine-tune and practice your
skills through role-play.

students will develop an original piece
of creative writing with guidance from
peers and instruction that focuses on
creating compelling characters, settings,
conflict, and an authentic narrative voice.
Course sessions will consist of lectures,
discussions, workshops, and writing
exercises. Instructor
Eric Erickson

an MA in English and Creative Writing and
has published fiction in several literary
journals. He is currently nearing the

Fast Track to Great Writing
Maybe you’ve got a great idea for a short
story or novel, and perhaps you’ve taken
a few writing classes to hone your skills.
Still, the writing process is complex and it’s
easy to stall out or get stuck. In a nutshell
approach, discover foundational writing
concepts for beginning or intermediate
writers. Class is a combination of lecture
and brief writing exercises design to help
you apply concepts before leaving class.
Class covers plotting, character, setting, and
point of view, along with tips for developing
and maintaining a good writing practice.

about writing” earlier in his career. Rick
has an MLS from University of Denver and

Grammar for Grown-Ups
Do you ever wonder why “University” is only
capitalized when it’s preceded by something
like “Colorado Free”? Are you puzzled about
why that question mark is outside the
quotes, when most punctuation goes inside?
If so, help is here! It’s easy to learn the real-
world grammar you need to know, such as
when to use “its” instead of “it’s”, what to
do about apostrophes and quotation marks,
how to manage capitalization questions, and
how to determine when you need a comma
or a semi-colon instead of a period. Review
the basics in a fun way; then grab a red pen
and practice making some corrections of
your own.
