Scale models of Galilean fishing boats, rest on the shores
along miniature towns.
From an Old Testament perspective, visitors can identify
the relative lands of each of the tribes of Judah across the
Holy Land. The site of Sodom and Gomorrah is marked,
and includes a model of Lot’s wife turned to a pillar of salt.
The well where Joseph was held until his brothers sold him
into captivity marks a bleak
moment in Jewish history.
Founded by the late Rev.
Walter Harvell Jackson in
1960, the gardens are laid out
with painstaking detail to
correspond to the historical
sites of the events of both the
Old and New Testaments in
the Bible. Rev Jackson
searched for sixteen years for
appropriate topography to host
the garden he envisioned. He found the right place outside
of Lucedale. In later years his daughter Jackie Kirkpatrick
and her husband Jim came to help run the Gardens. They
continued after the Jacksons passed away.
In 1994, current owner Don Bradley returned to the place
he had first visited as a third grade student in 1965. He felt
a deep calling to make an offer to the Kirkpatricks, only to
discover they were about to mount a campaign seeking a
buyer, due to health issues. The parties reached agreement
and Bradley has been maintaining and adding to the
attraction since then.
Bradley offers tours of the Gardens, complete with the
Bible stories for each locale. The paths offer easy walking
and Bradley keeps a golf cart available for guests who may
need a little help.
Entrance to the Gardens
is free, with donations
toward maintenance and
improvements accepted and
appreciated. Use of the map on
the website (
gardens.org/) is recommended,
as some GPS systems and
online mapping sites may lead
travelers astray.
Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Tuesday through Saturday and
1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, subject to weather closures. Regular
season is March through November, but Bradley will
accommodate visitors in the off season if they call
(601-947-8422) or email (
) and
make an appointment.
The charming town of Lucedale is located in George
County, east of Wiggins and north of Pascagoula. The Holy
