| Winter 2016
hen those smart people over at NASA went
looking for ways to clean the air in space sta-
tions, they turned to houseplants. NASA’s
Clean Air Study found that plants can re-
move benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroeth-
ylene, xylene and ammonia from the air, all toxins that have
been linked to health prob-
lems like headaches;
irritation to the
eyes, nose and
throat; and
nausea.
But not
all plants

For the best filters, add
these beauties to your
home or office:
the
florist’s
chr ysanthemum,
peace lily, red-edged dra-
caena, variegated snake plant,
and English ivy. Other air-en-
hancing plants include the Boston
fern, broadleaf lady palm, spider
plant, golden pathos and weeping fig.
Having one plant per 100 square feet
of space will do the trick.
If breathing easier isn’t reason
enough to cultivate a green
thumb, consider this: Having
plants in a room can also boost
mood and performance. This is
an idea that’s sure to grow roots,
spread wings, and take off!
Learn from the astronauts:
Go green
to clean the air
you breathe!
