he Knights of Columbus, founded by Father
Michael J. McGivney, was officially chartered
by the Connecticut state legislature on March
29, 1882 as a fraternal benefit society. The
Order is still true to its founding principles
of charity, unity, and fraternity.
The order has helped families obtain economic stability
through life insurance, annuity, and long-term care programs
and given time and energy in communities throughout the
world through volunteerism and donations to benevolent or-
ganizations.
The Knights of Columbus Organization has grown from
several men in one council to more than 15,100 councils rep-
resenting more than 1.9 million members throughout the
United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the
Dominican Republic, Puerto
Rico, Panama,
the Bahamas, the
Virgin Islands,
Cuba, Guatemala,
Guam,
Saipan,
Lithuania, Ukraine,
and South Korea.
The local Council
6872 has charities
they donate directly
to within Pearl River County. The men hold the annual
Tootsie Roll Drive that raises funds that go directly to local
schools. The semi-annual Knights Garage Sales, Weekly Char-
ity Bingo, and Annual Art Show all raise monies for local
needs like the Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets and
the Save-A-Life support endeavors.
The men cook a Breakfast after Mass once a month to raise
money to support students during their theological studies.
The main purpose of the Ladies Auxiliary is to support the
Knights of Columbus Council, to whichthey are connected,
in their benevolent endeavors.
It is widely thought that councils with auxiliaries are more
successful than councils without auxiliaries.
The Ladies Auxiliary is definitely an asset.
