t is common for patients to experience a
gradual recovery of health and strength
following a major illness or debilitating in-
jury. Today’s acute care facilities are man-
dated by insurance to discharge patients as
quickly as medically possible, which means patients and
their families have to make decisions concerning the pa-
tient’s care. It is not uncommon for these acute care fa-
cilities to encourage patients to transfer to a long term
care or rehab unit within their facility for continued care.
This decision can be burdensome for the family due to
traveling longer distances for visits or possibly not being
able to visit due to time and travel costs. In other in-
stances the patient and their family may decide to be dis-
charged home with home health. Sometimes with this
decision the family quickly realizes that the patient re-
quires more care than they are able to provide, especially
since home health visits are not daily.
An alternative solution might be a swing bed unit.
Pearl River County Hospital provides hospital-based
swing bed rehabilitation services for everyone. PRCH
swing bed unit is suited for patients who are ready to be
discharged from an acute care
facility but need more care
than their family or home
health can provide.
Patients are admitted to
our facility under the care of
one of our supervising physi-
cians. Hospitalists are also uti-
lized for around the clock care
while admitted to the unit.
Swing bed rooms are private
rooms with the nursing sta-
tion conveniently located
nearby. Upon arrival to our
facility the patient, family, physician, social worker, and
case manager begin to make decisions for the patient’s
continued care after swing bed.
Our services include physical, occupational, speech,
and respiratory therapy. We also have an onsite labora-
tory, radiology unit, CT and ultrasound service, and so-
cial services.
We offer all the benefits of a hospital, a hospitalists
on site 24/7, wifi, and private rooms with a private bath.
We also offer transportation to and from our facility ac-
companied by a member of our clinical staff. Medicare
and co-insurance plans will cover most, if not all, of the
cost of the swing bed program.
Medicare coverage is limited to 100 days of skilled
swing bed care per illness. Therefore, you will experience
a more complete rehabilitation following your hospital-
ization and return home ready to resume your normal
routine faster.
