Voice-Over
Do You Have What It Takes?
Learn about the lucrative and competitive
business of voice-over and what qualities
you need to succeed. Discover how to
break into voice-over and market your
voice talents. Topics include: union work
versus non-union; commercials for TV/
radio, narration, audio books and animation
voicing; and talent agents and managers.
You’ll work in front of a mic and “cold read”
two commercial spots, followed by critical
feedback.
Bill Smith
taught conservatory

Denver’s The Acting Studio in 1982 to
train stage, film, and voice-over actors. The
Studio includes a production division for
marketing demos and low budget films.

Voice-Over Intensive
Make Money in Voice-Over
This intensive workshop prepares you to
break into the voice-over industry. Begin
with techniques in voice speech dynamics
and warm-ups. Then, look at how to create
your demo website of samples of your
voice work to get your foot in the door of
this potentially lucrative industry. What
equipment do you need to build your home
voice-over studio? You’ll rehearse and record
a range of “copy”-TV/radio commercials,
infomercials, and samples of narration,
audio-books and animation. Receive (by
email) MP3s of your four studio sessions.
Learn mic technique, interpretation and
characterization, and how to get your
demo produced. Be ready to work hard,
do homework, and get detailed critiques
of your strengths and weaknesses.
Bill
Smith
, director of The Acting Studio
(Denver), earned an MFA in Directing from
Ohio University School of Theater. He was
certified as a master teacher by Arthur
Lessac, the renowned innovator of a voice
and speech system for stage, film, and
broadcast actors. Must have access to email

Make Money in Audiobooks
A Voice-Over Workshop
Voice-over is not just about TV and radio
commercials. “Audiobooks” is the biggest
voice-over growth industry in the last
decade. Audiobook voice-over work can be
a good source of income and enormously
gratifying. This class focuses on how to
voice fiction and non-fiction books. Learn
about the equipment and software you need
for your home studio and how to set it up
cost effectively. Explore the different styles
of voicing non-fiction (history, biography,
science, e-books, self-help, etc.). Learn
how to bring alive a novel which requires
a narrator and suggestions of character
voices. Find out how to market your skills
and talent.
Bill Smith
, of The Acting Studio,
coaches in all types of voice-over and has
taught voice-over training through CFU for
nine years. In the last two years, twelve of
Bill Smith’s voice-over students have voiced
audiobooks, for pay, for a national company,
ACX.COM. Whether your goal is to build a
career in voice-over or to learn the basics
so you can volunteer for organizations like
Learning Alley (who do recordings for the
blind and dyslexic), this workshop will get
you going. Must have access to email and
a computer between sessions for homework.

Acting for Stage AND Film
Stage and film acting are close cousins,
but they employ different techniques and
degrees of emotional expression. The most
successful actors in Colorado work in all
media: theatre, movies, commercials, and
voiceover. Join, for 4 weeks, an “ongoing”
workshop that explores various acting
methods and develops your audition skills.
Explorations include voice/speech warm-
ups, monologues, and scene study, all
adjusted for your professional goals in stage
and/or film. All exercises are recorded on
your personal DVD. Training includes the
“Biz”: resumes, headshots, and how to get a
talent agent. This ongoing workshop brings
in participants of all levels of performance
experience.
Bill Smith
is SAG/AFTRA, has
operated five theatre companies, and taught
acting at Cornell University’s MFA Theatre

NEW! The Art of the Parody
Song
From Concept to Performance.
Are you the next “Weird Al” Yankovic? Parody
song writing has been around for centuries,
but the art form has become very popular in
America over the last three decades. Parody
songs are everywhere: on YouTube, your
favorite radio station, in television, in plays
and even in movies. Writing a parody can be
a great way to celebrate a family member or
roast a colleague.
Gregory Cairns
, Esq., a
full time lawyer and avid parody writer, will
help you develop your parody writing skills.
Learn about the history of the art form and
the basic elements of a clever parody song.
View and discuss parodies of famous songs
broadcast on YouTube, to see what works.
Participants will be invited to write their own
parody song and get feedback during the
second session. Those who have the moxie
get the chance to perform it for the group.
No previous experience is required.
