Evaluate the pros and cons, find out where
to go and how to get your work into print,
and get guidance about marketing and
distribution. Explore the tradeoffs of selling
with Amazon with its wide reach and built-in
algorithm with varied royalties, versus using
another platform that lets you keep much

The Key to Intimacy
Compassionate Communication
When we connect deeply with the ones we
care about, life is rich and meaningful.
Becoming aware of the habitual ways we
communicate enables us to enhance this
connection and cultivate intimate satisfying
relationships. Drawing from the ground-
breaking communication work of Marshal
Rosenberg, you will learn how to build
empathic bonds by becoming aware of the
needs that drive your actions and the needs
that motivate others. Once you are clear
about the needs that underlie the actions of
the other person, you have a much better
chance of finding satisfying solutions to any
differences. Just understanding each other’s
needs deepens our connections and leads
us to more compassionate interaction. Poet,
writer, life coach,
David Steele
, has studied
and taught interpersonal communication
skills for thirty years. He is a co-founder
of Rocky Mountain Compassionate
Communication. These teachings profoundly
transformed his life and he is eager to share
them.

Write a Blockbuster!
Secrets to Successful Modern Fic-
tion, Memoir, & Screenplay
There are elements in common to all
blockbusters, regardless of genre, that
can be identified and mimicked. This class
dissects modern bestsellers like Eat, Pray,
Love, The Hunger Games series, or Wild, to
discover the repeatable elements that all
successful manuscripts have in common.
Once you know the elements of a successful
story, you can weave them into your work
from the very beginning. In class, learn how
to analyze successful movies and books
on your own, and practice incorporating
key elements into opening, hooks, and
scenes. The focus is on concrete, descriptive
language, action, character motivation,
emotion, conflict and how use them to
maximum effect. Leave with some new
writing skills and the knowledge of how to
model your work after that of authors who
have been extremely successful.

Plotting a Novel, Memoir, or
Screenplay
The Structure That Holds It All
Together
Mythic structure can be found in almost
every myth worldwide from ancient times
to modern-day blockbusters, like Star Wars,
Harry Potter, and Avatar. This structure
creates compelling stories and provides
organization, giving you an essential tool to
complete a novel, memoir, or screenplay.
Students will learn about the 12 stages of
the hero’s journey and use those 12 stages
to plot the main character’s journey. During
class students will work with their own story
ideas and turn them into functional outlines.
