Batik Watercolor Painting
In just a few hours, learn the fun process
of batik wax resist on rice paper to make
a gorgeous watercolor painting suitable
for framing. Batik is an ancient Indonesian
technique of layering wax to resist paint or
dyes. Start by tracing a prepared design
(there are many gorgeous ones to choose
from) and then learn how to layer the wax
and paint colors of your choice to build up
depth and color. Then iron out the wax and
voila! You have a gorgeous picture ready to
slip in a frame.
Lydia Rea
and
Mary Tharp
host the class. Lydia Rea has taught the
popular Bob Ross painting classes at CFU
for many years, and Mary is also a painting
teacher. You simply will not believe how
easy it is to create spectacular results with
this technique! See CFU website course
description or your ticket for required
materials to bring.

Linoleum Block
Printing
Block printing is a
wonderful way to create
expressive and detailed
prints using blocks
of linoleum. A middle
ground between the
arduous and imprecise
art of wood block
printing and the ease
and simplicity of stamp
making, linoleum block printing lets you
create fine art prints using tools that are
safe and inexpensive and materials that are
easy to acquire as well as clean up. In this
two part class, Printmaker
Ryan Youngblood
(MFA Fine Arts 2008) will guide you through
the steps in a fun and informative way.
Join him on a journey from idea to sketch
to block carving to printing with individual
guidance and advice. Ryan will insure that
by the end of the class you will know how
to make and print any idea you might have,
and know the right materials, tools, and how
to use them safely and effectively. Although
this class will teach you to print onto paper,
linoleum blocks can be used over and over
again to print onto almost any surface
including clothing and are an inexpensive
way to make fine art prints at home.

Getting Started with
SoulCollage®
SoulCollage® is a joyful and enriching
creative activity embraced worldwide.
Using simple materials such as magazine
pictures, you will make interesting and
beautiful 5 x 8 cards (no artistic talent
needed!). Each card represents a part of
yourself and the deck reflects you as a
whole. This process was developed by Seena
B. Frost who wrote SoulCollage® Evolving.
People use the cards to access their own
inner wisdom by journaling with their cards,
noting themes and relationships between
cards, and “reading” their cards individually
or with others. You will be introduced to
card making basics, the 4 suits of the
SoulCollage® deck (Committee, Community,
Companion, Council) as well as how to
journal with your cards and do personal
readings. Art Therapist and SoulCollage®
Facilitator
Gayle Bodine
has taught drawing
and mixed media art classes at CFU over
the years. Whether you’re seeking a tool for
intuitive understanding or just eager for a
fun creative outlet, you’ll love this class.

Artistic Book Building
Play & Create a Page at a Time
Learn step by step techniques to build one-
of-a-kind accordion books that are perfect to
use as personal journals, travel logs, special
occasion books (weddings, babies), or just
a unique gift for a special friend. Each book
is made page by page, and can include all
sorts of clever pockets to hold mementos
and photos, flaps, fold-outs, and interesting
papers and embellishments. The books
look complicated, but you’ll learn three
simple construction techniques for pages on
which endless variations can be made. Even
if you don’t think you are creative (pish-
posh!), you will take home a stunning and
entirely original work of art and the skills
to do it again and again.
