Basic Drawing
Seeing as Drawing
To draw well, you have to see well. The
mind wants the hand to draw as it imagines
things appear rather than what the eye
observes. Come learn to see with the eye of
an artist and experiment with many basic
drawing techniques such as contour, line,
and gesture drawing as well as dealing
with negative space. We’ll explore the
fascinating process of describing three-
dimensional objects on a two-dimensional
surface (paper) in a way that evokes
realistic representation.

Beginning Colored Pencil
Techniques
Bust out in a riot of color in this beginning
level drawing class. Drawing and shading
with colored pencils is not hard once you
learn some basic color theory and learn
how to “see” the rainbow of colors that can
be used to describe something as simple
as a blueberry or apple. Class will focus on
learning and implementing three colored
pencil techniques: layering, underpainting,
and burnishing. Practice each technique and
then choose a colorful photograph to create
a more elaborate drawing from.
Deb Rohr
is a lifelong artist with a long background
in drawing and painting though she made a
living as a motor sport and fine art/portrait
photographer for more than 10 years. Work
from a selection of colorful photographic
images (you choose what appeals to you),
and leave with the skills to expand into your
other drawing projects. Class focuses on
how to use colored pencils effectively and
assumes very basic drawing skills.

NEW! Botanical Sketching
Are you a creative
who lacks
confidence in
your drawing
skills or one who
wants to add
nature sketching
to your toolkit?
This course will
teach you how to
see and draw like
an artist. Using
basic supplies and
a mixed media
sketchbook you will develop your artistic
“muscle”. Nature, especially botanicals,
are themselves great subjects for sketching
because their beauty is pleasurable to
observe and capture. Furthermore, the
nature sketching skills you learn translate
to drawing other subjects as well. We will
use flowers and fruits as our “models” and
you will also learn to analyze and artfully
interpret a picture or photo. This course will
introduce you to the elements and principles
of art and get you started making confident
marks and identifying shapes; using contour
drawing to sketch natural objects; adding
highlights and shadows; and adding texture,
pattern and color.

A Fun & Easy Art Form
Feeling stressed? Need help focusing? Want
to disconnect a bit from the electronic
world we live in? You have picked the right
class. Zentangle® is an easy-to-learn
art form using black ink on white paper
and shading with a soft pencil. You will
be amazed in your ability to learn this
meditative art form and create beautiful
abstract pictures. Even if you can’t draw
a straight line, you will leave these classes
full of pride, excitement and wonder! You
will be able to combine an infinite number
of tangles/designs in so many imaginative
ways. Take home the skills to practice what
you learn in each class.
Dusty Darrah
is
our certified Zentangle® teacher. She says
“no drawing skills needed.” Each basic
class will introduce you to 8 new/different
tangles (designs) so you can feasibly come
to all of Dusty’s basic classes and never
repeat the same tangles. The $10 materials
fee is for a kit of a Micron pen, practice
paper, soft pencil and sharpener, a blending
smudger for shading, and 3 paper tiles.
The November, and January sessions will
feature Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA) themes
that have a prerequisite of taking a basic
zentangle class and being familiar with at
least 10 tangles. Please bring your basic
kit and colored pencils with you to class for
those sessions.
