Renewing Our Community
Each month I read
the names of the new
residents who have
purchased homes here
at Windsor Gardens. I
remember what it was
like to move: to pack up
or give away familiar
possessions and then
rearrange them in a new
place. For many the move was made at
the urging of family or the realization that
it was time. Time to give up caring for a
larger home, to stop climbing stairs, to
simplify one’s living. I remember when our
furniture was in place and we sat down to
our first meal, we looked around and said
to each other, “This is all we need. This is
our last move.”
Recently I have been wondering about the
residents who have moved away. What
was it that occasioned their departure?
Another trip to the E.R., the lost keys
that were found in the freezer or the
urging of family to find a more supportive
environment? What was it like to make
that decision and pack up again, this time
with fewer things? What was it like for
neighbors to say goodbye? I remember
Rusty, Ginny, Margie, Del, Bertha, Erlene,
Bob and Laverne, Clara, Bill and Marian
with her dog Kiesha.
My new neighbors are younger: delightful,
funny, caring and busy. Windsor Gardens
is being refreshed with new life and
one day Clare or I will hand our keys to
someone new and say, “Welcome, I hope
you enjoy this home as much as we have.”
