W

e are fortunate to

live in the most

beautiful state

in the United

States. I am sure that there

are those who would debate the

issue with me, but I am certain

of this and one of the reasons I

am proud to call Colorado home.

It is vacation season; we are

planning time away; traveling to

another state, perhaps another

country or continent. Hmmm,

I need to rethink our vacation

plans.

I spend approximately 50-60

hours a week inside at my desk

or at my job. I sleep 45-50

hours a week and inside my

home doing domestic chores,

watching television, etc. another

20-30 hours a week. That

leaves me 28 hours to do ‘out-

side’ things from car mainte-

nance, shopping, visiting some-

one else’s house, going to the

movies, out to dinner; you get

the idea. My week has flown

by. I did enjoy the sunset from

my deck a couple of nights this

week.

I just got up from my desk

to walk next door to visit a col-

league. I had to go outside and

I want to tell you it is great out-

doors!

Through Presidential

Proclamation, June is Great

Outdoors Month! All 50

Governors are encouraged to

issue similar proclamations

to reflect the

attention

being given to

the economic

importance of

recreation and

the special role

of the Great

Outdoors in re-

establishing the

United States

as a major

destination

for international visitors. Our

health community also stresses

the importance of spending

active time in the great out-

doors; better health, better edu-

cation and support for conserva-

tion. This is a win win scenario!

Our environment is our

inheritance. An inheritance

that we continue to bequeath to

the next generation, more than

an inheritance it is our legacy.

And, like anything where we

spend committed time our

appreciation and awareness

grows. We come to understand

that it is not OK to liter, we pick

up our messes. That water is a

resource and we have a respon-

sibility to keep it clean and not

waste it. Trees are magnificent

whether hundreds of years old

or a new sapling, take care.

State and national parks, trails,

campgrounds and green belts

are dedicated natural habitat;

respect and learn from other

living creatures with which we

share our space.

Moms and Dads all across

America are telling their vaca-

tioning school children to go

outside and play. This will be

met with slumped shoulders,

looks of disbelief and replies

that go something like, “there

is nothing to do outside.” Not

unlike many adult reactions.

So, you need to know that just

being outside stimulates creativ-

ity and develops social skills.

There are a lot of reasons to

get outside: spurs weight loss,

makes exercise easier, improves

vision, increases vitamin D

intake and brain function, great

for stress reduction, helps us

age gracefully and just makes

us happier folks. What could

we all do with less weight, more

energy, better concentration and

more creativity, better sleep and

fewer aches and pains?

Enjoy Colorado air this sum-

mer, there are so many places to

go and things to do. The Great

Outdoors is calling, play golf

with ASAC on Friday, July 17,

2015 at Red Hawk Ridge Golf

Course. I’m having a picnic

with my grandson under the

tree in my backyard tomorrow

afternoon. My husband is seal-

ing the driveway tonight and

I’m going to sit on the porch,

outside, and watch him. There

is a lot to do outside, get out

there and enjoy!
