Walker Parking Consultants
has begun the design of one of
the largest design-build parking
projects ever developed at a U.S.
airport.
The parking consulting firm is
designing the 1,795-space park-
ing structure at Denver Inter-
national Airport. The four-story
facility will be located on the
southeast corner of the Jeppesen
Terminal.
Walker, which has designed
parking structures at more than
80 airports nationwide, will
serve as the designer while
Swinerton Builders will oversee
construction.
The $46 million project is
expected to be complete in sum-
mer 2016.
“This is a landmark airport
parking project,” said Bob Stan-
ley, PE, LEED AP, managing
principal of Walker Parking’s
Denver office. “Most airports
don’t think of design-build as an
option for large parking facili-
ties. However, this approach can
provide significant benefits, pro-
viding a streamlined approach
to promote cost savings and an
overall reduction in the project
delivery schedule. When you
consider that most airports rely
on parking as vital revenue
sources, the time saved in devel-
oping new facilities can have a
very positive effect on an air-
port’s bottom line.”
The new Jeppesen terminal
parking facility is part of a larg-
er expansion project that will
include the construction of an
additional 261 parking spaces
adjacent to the north end of the
east parking garage. Another
430 spaces were recently added
to the east and west economy
lots through a redesign of the
current layout. Upon comple-
tion of the project, DIAwill offer
a total of 19,496 garage parking
spaces and will manage a total
of 43,275 parking spaces.
In 2014, the airport added
reserved parking spaces in the
east and west parking garages
and electric vehicle charging sta-
tions were installed in late 2013.
DIA also recently completed a
project that retrofit more than
5,400 lights in the existing park-
ing garages with energy-efficient
LED fixtures to improve lighting
and reduce energy consump-
tion.
Denver International Airport
is the 15th-busiest airport in the
world and the fifth-busiest air-
port in the United States.

The Denver Union Sta-
tion Transit Improvements
received two awards from The
Association of General Con-
tractors of America and Alli-
ance Insurance Services Inc.
for the development of Denver
Union Station. Kiewit West-
ern Co., joined by Trammell
Crow Co., attended the award
presentation at AGC’s 96th
Annual Convention. DUS was
designated the winner of the
Design-Build Highway and
Transportation award and the
merit winner in the Partnering
Excellence category for 2015.
The Alliant Build Amer-
ica Awards honor projects
that build the nation's most
impressive construction proj-
ects ranging across the build-
ing, highway and transporta-
tion, utility infrastructure, and
federal and heavy divisions.
The Partnering Excellence cat-
egory recognizes projects best
epitomizing the principles of
partnering.
“We are pleased to accept
this award which exemplifies
the true definition of partner-
ship,” said Trammell Crow
Co.’s Denver Business Unit
Senior Managing Director Bill
Mosher. “An integral aspect
to the success of the project
was creating a design-build
team of landowners, develop-
ers, designers, engineers, and
landscape architects familiar
with working on complex
intermodal projects. Through
our partnerships with the
Regional Transportation Dis-
trict, the city and county of
Denver, the Denver Regional
Council of Governments and
our entire development team,
we believe we have delivered
a truly multimodal commu-
nity for the city of Denver.”
DUS is the hub of the RTD’s
FasTracks Program, an expan-
sion plan to build 140 miles of
new commuter rail, light rail
and bus rapid transit to serve
over 25 million annual passen-
gers in Denver. The project has
transformed 42 acres of former
rail yards centered on historic
Union Station in Lower Down-
town into a community of
mixed-use development orga-
nized around a 21st-century
transportation infrastructure
in an exemplary sustainable
urban environment.
The consortium assembled
as a single-purpose nonprofit
known as the Denver Union
Station Project Authority
included representatives from
the RTD, the city and county of
Denver, the Denver Regional
Council of Governments, Col-
orado Department of Trans-
portation and private citizens
appointed by the mayor. TCC
served as the owner represen-
tative for DUSPA. The design-
build team included: Kiewit
Western Co., AECOM, Skid-
more, Owings & Merrill and
Hargreaves.
