Henry County As It Was
“l was a little bit slow getting
into the crowd,” he says. “My
wife got me into the crowd here,
but once I got to coming, I don’t
guess I’ve missed but one or two
days in the last three or four
years coming here … It’s a
bonding between everybody
here, I believe. They really
regret if they have to miss.”
Norman Strawn of
McDonough says the class of
1954 includes people he met
when they were in first grade
together. He says the group has
been through a lot together over
the years, and that they continue
to make memories together.
“These are all my classmates
and my friends,” says Strawn. “I
think we do well to accumulate
20, 25 people at these monthly
meetings. And during the
reunion, we probably have 30 or
40. So, that’s not bad for an old
class.”
For more information on the
reunion, call Addie Wilkinson at

“Celebrating Henry County”
From Staff Reports
The Heritage Writers Group of
McDonough recently elected
Dr. Michael McLarnon as its
president for 2016-17.
McLarnon is a retired psychia-
trist and author of L’Orange
Rain novels, psychological mys-
tery/thrillers set in the near
future of Los Angeles. He grad-
uated the University of Notre
Dame and completed his psy-
chiatry residency at the
University of Texas, and a fel-
lowship at the Medical College
of Georgia.
“Writing is a solitary endeav-
or,” says McLarnon, “and the
Heritage Writers Group offers
writers a chance to support each
other, to suggest constructive
criticism, and provide moral
support.”
The group was founded in
2003 and enables writers, pub-
lished authors, and poets to
share ideas on writing tech-
niques and publishing, and to
discuss the craft of writing. The
group has also assisted members
in the publishing of 53 books.
The group meets the second
and fourth Sundays of each
month from 2-4 p.m., at the
McDonough Public Library,
1001 Florence McGarity Blvd.
Writers can bring up to three
double-spaced pages to read,
and receive feedback from
group members.
McLarnon says such collabora-
tion is an essential component of
the writing process.
“I find the critique of the other
writer’s invaluable,” says
McLarnon. “It really helps
improve the quality of my
work.”
McLarnon is an accomplished
writer and editor whose work
features insights into his profes-
sion. He is currently editing a
new book of short stories and
poems by Writers Group mem-
bers that is due out in
September. McLarnon lives in
Jackson with his wife Melinda,
the longtime director of the
Butts County Chamber of
Commerce.
