Gulf Pine Catholic • March 9, 2018 21 Diana Punzo has been hired as the St. Patrick Catholic High School Girls golf coach. Punzo is originally from Roswell, New Mexico, and began playing golf at the age of 13. She qualified to play on the high school varsity girls golf team for Goddard High School as an eighth grader. Punzo played five years of high school varsity golf, which included five District 4-AAAA and State AAAA Championship team wins. Three SPCHS seniors recently signed letters of intent to play sports on the college level. Austin Schepens (football) and Makayla Pfarrer (soccer) will play at Millsaps College, while Ryan Hymel (soccer) will play at Hinds Community College. Schepens Pfarrer Hymel St. Patrick Catholic High School, Biloxi Our Lady Academy, Bay St. Louis JACKSON -- Our Lady Academy (OLA) Sophomore Emily Greene won second place at the State Reading Fair in the Literary Fiction and Non- Fiction Narrative category. Before advancing to the state competition, Greene won first place in her divi- sion at the Mississippi Regional Reading Fair held in January. Emily Greene earned second place with her rendi- tion of “The Book Jumper” by Mechthild Glaser. Emily’s display included images of book pages that incorporated major components required for an official reading fair project. OLASophomore Emily Greene was awarded Second Place in the State Reading Fair. Our Lady Academy (OLA) students Devin Graham, Taylor Wypyski, Ella Taylor, Naomi Garcia, Suzie Brown and Abby Whaley received awards for their work submitted in the Promote the Vote project at the State Capital. Students submitted essays entitled “Moving Forward” wherein they identified an issue in their region and proposed how they would address it. OLA students, Abby Whaley, Taylor Wypyski, Suzie Brown, Ella Taylor and Devin Graham receive achievement awards from Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. For the Art Contest, students submitted their depiction of “My Mississippi.” OLA students took the top three awards in the sev- enth-ninth Art Contest. Devin Graham captured first place, Taylor Wypyski took second and Ella Taylor earned third place. In the tenth-twelfth grade art catego- ry, Naomi Garcia won second place. In the essay cate- gory, Suzie Brown seized first place and Abby Whaley took third place. Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann established Promote the Vote which is a voter education program targeted to K-12 grades. The project’s objective was created to teach the fundamentals of our democracy and encourage students to familiarize themselves with political issues that affect our State. This year Promote the Vote was centered around “Mississippi’s Bicentennial Birthday.” Thousands of students from all over the state participated in the pro- gram. Of the thousands, only one hundred and five were recognized for their outstanding representation of Mississippi. Holy Trinity Catholic School, Bay St. Louis Holy Trinity hosted the Hancock County Spelling Bee for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. After six nail- biting rounds of spelling, fifth grader, Max Potier, claimed the victory with the word voluminous and finalized the competition with the championship word crampon. Max will represent Hancock County in the MS State Spelling Bee in Jackson during March.
