Volume 35 No. 14 www.biloxidiocese.org March 9, 2018 Catholic Cathedral filled to capacity for annual Rite of Election Twenty-seven parishes were represented at this year’s Rite of the Elect and Call to Continuing Conversion, which took place on March 4 at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral. Pictured left, Bishop Louis F. Kihneman greets Jarquavious Tate of St. Rose de Lima Parish in Bay St. Louis. At right, Bishop Kihneman greets Louis Trotter, from St. James Parish in Gulfport, as Monique Guillot interprets for Trotter in sign language. Cathedral Rector Father Dennis Carver is pictured in the background. The Rite of Election is when candidates seeking full communion in the church and catechumens seeking baptism publicly declare their intent, their sponsors speak on their behalf and the bishop of a diocese accepts them. This year, approximately 200 candidates and catechumen participated in the Rite of Election. The tradition brings together people from across the diocese and begins an intense period of final preparation for these faithful as they approach Easter.
