22 Gulf Pine Catholic • March 9, 2018 As part of the State of Mississippi's Bicentennial celebration, the Jackson County Historical and Genealogical Society recently sponsored an essay contest, with the winning essay to be included in a time capsule buried at Lighthouse Park in Pascagoula. Resurrection Catholic High School junior, Emma Landry of Gautier, received the first place prize of $400. Emma is the daughter of Buddy and Susan Landry of Gautier. Resurrection Catholic School, Pascagoula The students of Our Lady of Fatima Elementary are participating in the Catholic basketball league. Students from grades three to six play against the other neighboring Catholic schools. OLF has eight teams competing in the league. “This is a great basketball league”, said Cindy Hahn, Principal. “Our parents help out by coaching the teams and our players enjoy the competition.” The season starts in January and ends in February. Our Lady of Fatima Elementary sent two students to compete in the local MATHCOUNTS Competition Series held at USM -- Gulf Park on Feb. 16. The competition is a national program that provides students the opportunity to compete against their peers. The local meet had over 100 students in grades sixth, seventh and eighth from 13 local public and private schools in a math competition. Under the direction of OLF math teacher, Michelle Moak, OLF sent two sixth graders, Zoie Davis and Heith Shinn, to the competition. Heith captured first place in the sixth grade division and will travel to Jackson in late March to compete in the state competition. Our Lady of Fatima Elementary, Biloxi Sacred Heart Elementary, D’Iberville On Feb. 8, Sacred Heart Elementary held its annual Math and Science Family Night. Students and their families viewed Science Fair Projects and completed fun science- and math-based activities with teachers in their classrooms. Pictured, l-r, are Jackson Ladner, Owen and Ava Casey. St. Patrick Catholic High School seniors Tyler Jackson and Richard Springer have been selected as Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2018. These academ- ically-talented high school seniors now have an opportunity to con- tinue in the competition to be awarded a National Merit Scholarship, which will be offered March 2018. In October of last year, the St. Patrick Class of 2018 took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or the PSAT/NMSQT. Out of about 1.6 million high school seniors from around the United States, 16,000 became National Merit Semifinalists based on their aca- demic performance on the PSAT/ NMSQT. The National Merit Scholarship Program has now determined which of the 16,000 semifinalists named in September 2017 have met all requirements to advance to finalist standing in the competition. Jackson is the son of Gary and Linda Jackson of Gulfport, and Springer is the son of Rick and Kathy Springer of Biloxi, and he is a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish.
