Poplarville St. Joseph Altar
Legend holds that in the Middle Ages the people of Sicily, Italy, witnessed a
severe drought. The people prayed to St. Joseph that things would return
to normal. If this petition was granted, their descendants would honor him
on his feast day until the end of time. At the stroke of midnight, rain began
to fall. At daylight, wells and streams had water, vegetation was already
turning green and fishermen went out and filled their boats with fish. The
next day was St. Joseph’s feast day so an altar was erected in his honor.
Food of all descriptions were placed on the altar, shared with everyone
present and then distributed to the poor. Here are some images from the
St. Joseph Altar erected by St. Joseph Parish, Poplarville on March 19.
