On Dec. 3, 19 St. Vincent de Paul sixth graders traveled to Mississippi College in Clinton to compete
against other middle and high school teams in the International Economic Summit. The IES is an annual
competition designed to simulate the world economy. Student teams compete against each other to try to
raise the standard of living in the countries they’ve chosen to represent. (They do this by earning points
in the summit.) St. Vincent de Paul had four student teams representing Belize, Ecuador, Portugal, and
Russia. The students competed in a geography quiz and an economics test; they also had the option to
take a personal finance quiz and a current events quiz. The student teams had to join trade alliances
then trade for valuable resources. They had the opportunity to invest in long term development projects
for their country as well as campaign for support for their proposal to solve a global economic issue. St.
Vincent de Paul students scored very well. Team Russia and Team Ecuador won points for Outstanding
Table Displays, and Team Ecuador also won points for Outstanding Costumes. Team Portugal was the
top scoring High Income Country; Team Russia was the top scoring Middle Income Country, and Team
Ecuador was the top scoring Low Income Country. Left, Team Russia members are Luke Beyer, Thomas
