/ BUILDING DIALOGUE / JUNE 2015

Postcards

H

eart of Jeddah is a key new development within the old airport site that offers a

unique vision for the creation of a new destinationwithin the city of Jeddah. Key

features of this complete mixed-use development include a multimodal transit

hub, multiple retail zones, family entertainment, a variety of food and beverage choices,

exhibition center, commercial offices, hotels, medical center, and residential units and

amenities of all types. All of these functions are organized around a world-class water

feature and dancing fountain. Various districts within the project are linked together by

a series of canals and associated pedestrian paths that wind their way through the site.

Heart of Jeddah is designed with sustainable principals that focus on providing

connectivity, reducing the waste in the use of water and energy, encourages recy-

cling, and support healthy living environment.

The social and economic benefits of the Heart of Jeddah development will carry

beyond the project boundary and will provide a new destination for all the residents

and visitors of Jeddah to enjoy.

E

ach year an annual open competition for the design of a temporary “warming hut,”

constructed along Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Assiniboine River, encourages both estab-

lished and emerging practices. As an invited participant for the 2015 event, Mexico

City-based Rojkind Arquitectos designed this innovative structure, which was one of

four entries. Named the “hybirdhut,” this intricate timber creationwelcomes skaters and

those passing by to enter, offering surprising warmth in this traditionally frigid region.

By leveraging inventive structural solutions by Boulder-based Studio NYL Struc-

tural Engineers, Rojkind’s design team brought this new hybrid to life through the

merging of computer-aided design parametric design, digital fabrication and tradi-

tional craftsmanship. The pavilion thoughtfully examines the role of contemporary

design while questioning the interplay between machine-driven products, the hu-

man art of craft, and the evolving role of the architect.
