“You really have to incorporate a wide range of
sustainable strategies to achieve Platinum,” said
Jade Mercer, project manager for Adolfson & Peter-
son Construction. “Sustainability isn’t just a buzz-
word; it’s the way we like to build and I personally
am extremely proud to work on a LEED Platinum
building that is going to be such a valuable re-
source to people in need.” The building will in-
tegrate an array of cost-effective features, such as
a high-performance envelope, hydronic heating/
evaporative cooling, daylighting and interior glaz-
ing to increase light penetrations. Platinum, the
highest of four certification levels, requires proj-
ects to earn 80 of the possible 110 points in the U.S.
Green Building Council’s measurement of sus-
tainable performance for a new office building.
Though the full building isn’t scheduled to be
completely open until September, A&P was re-
cently challenged by the county to accommodate
unforeseen conditions.
“As a construction manager, our primary re-
sponsibility is to work with the owner and the de-
signer to solve problems, whatever they may be,”
observed Mercer. Currently, A&P and the coun-
ty are looking at possible schedule acceleration
strategies, including weekend work and enhanced
trade overlap coordination. This would allow the
A&P team to provide early access to floors one and
two in June to facilitate a smooth transition be-
tween old and new. After all, everyone needs a lit-
tle help sometimes.
