20 Gulf Pine Catholic • January 30, 2026 Holy Rosary Parish commemorates visit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hattiesburg participated in a pre-Martin Luther King Jr. Day event Monday, Jan. 12, as part of joint activities sponsored by the Hattiesburg-Forrest County Interfaith Commission and the city of Hattiesburg. The event included a reception and unity service at Holy Rosary, followed by a unity march, wreath presentation at 1004 Spencer Street, and a service held one block from Holy Rosary, also on Spencer Street at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Approximately two weeks before he was assassinated, Dr. King gave a speech at Mt. Zion during his only visit to Hattiesburg during the civil rights movement. While in Hattiesburg, he visited with then Holy Rosary Pastor Father Peter Quinn, who was a prominent civil rights activist in the Hub City and a friend of Dr. King. Photos/David Tisdale
