www.southernsenior.info 15 Dear Diary, Hi there. It's me, Emma. One of my most important duties around my house is keeping Mom on the schedule that I have designed just for her. She doesn’t do everything I tell her. I don’t do everything she tells me either but I am better with sched- ules that she is and I am more persistent. Every morning I hear her alarm clock and I meow and jump on her so she’ll get up and open the door for me. I need to go outside and do my rounds in the neighbor- hood. Sometimes I have to jump on her several times be- cause she likes to go back to sleep and I have to get her up again. I have to keep after her on this one. From time to time during the day, it is my job to remind Mom to fill my food bowl. Just because there’s food in the bowl, doesn’t mean that I’m interested in either the food or the bowl. And besides, I need my food fresh when I’m ready for it. Mom likes to sit at her computer googling and gaming, and I have scheduled that activity for right after my lunch. If she sits down before my lunch, I need to remind her in my loudest meow that she needs to stay on schedule and feed me first. Sometimes I have to be really loud to keep her on track. It is also my job to remind Mom when it is time for me to have my tasty treat. Rubbing against her foot and purring is often effective in this case. Sometimes I announce to her, “Mom, it’s time for my treat!” My last resort is to sharpen my claws on the furniture. That always works. In the evening, it is time for me to have my fur brushed. She’s usually watching TV so I need to nudge her leg, sometimes with my teeth, and remind her that she’s the only one with opposable thumbs who can hold the hair- brush for me. At night when it is time to go to bed, it is my job to get Mom to stop watching her movie or playing her game or whatever else she is going, and stay on the sleep sched- ule that I have created for her.
