18 Gulf Pine Catholic • October 4, 2019 Spotlight on Schools The HTCS Ambassador Ministry Team, under the guidance of the OLA Retreat Team, kicked off the new school year with a retreat focusing on Christian leadership. Throughout the retreat, ambassadors were led to focus on ways to let their light shine while being good Christian leaders and role models for others in our school community. Team- building activities demonstrated positive ways for our ministry to work as one to accomplish our goals for the year. After listening to Scripture readings and learning about some of the Saints that we as Catholics celebrate in our faith, the students created and presented plays that exhibited how the virtue of each saint could be shared in our lives today. Students ended the retreat by sharing in Scripture readings and making bracelets to remind them of the qualities that make a good Christian leader and role model. Having the OLA Retreat Team conduct the retreat was an excellent example of Christian leadership and teamwork for the Ambassadors to experience firsthand. The faculty at OLF Elementary uses innovative tactics to engage their students in learning. In Michele Polovich’s PK-4 class, she came up with a creative way to learn the letters of the alphabet. For the letter “S”, she asked her students to dress as his or her favorite super hero. The students took to the task and wore their favorite super hero costume. Our Lady of Fatima Elementary School, Biloxi September is a month to celebrate grandparents and to focus on the important part that they play in the lives of our children. The Holy Trinity Catholic School family recently honored grandparents and special friends with a morning of prayer and classroom visits. During the prayer service, led by the fifth grade, we were reminded of our school theme, “Let Your Light Shine,” as a candle was lit for the example of our grandparents who help us to shine each day. Grandparents who were unable to visit with us were represented with a globe. A crucifix represented those who were sick at home or in a hospital, and the Bible was presented to represent those grand- parents who are no longer with us. Grandparents and special friends were invited into the classrooms to view student work, share in small activities, as well as answer interview-style questions that told about their life experiences. The morning ended with a reception in the cafeteria for our beloved grandparents and special friends. The HTCS Ambassador Leadership Ministry is comprised of fifth and sixth graders. The mission of the ministry is to develop students into Christ-like, responsible leaders while building relationships among themselves as a team, within their school, and local communities. Members will assist faculty and staff around the school; host school-wide prayer services; greet and lead tours for potential students; promote our faith through religious activities; as well as represent our school in community activities. Students were selected based on their application which described their merits in community service, academics, and leadership.
