Catholic Journeys (800) 715-6670 Pro-Life Billboards on Interstate 10 BY CATHY GILL Two Pro-Life billboards are on display to South Mississippi drivers, both on Interstate 10 in Gulfport and Biloxi. One billboard is visible to drivers traveling west to New Orleans, LA, and is near the Menge Avenue exit. The other billboard is on Interstate 10 right off Highway 49 exit facing east if you are traveling towards Mobile, AL. Four hundred thousand people will see these billboards every week. The intention of the billboards is to send a spiritual, loving message to any woman that may be contemplating abortion. The billboard idea was the inspiration of a small group of Catholic men and women who have been praying about the most critical issue in the world today, protecting and defending the life of the unborn. God said, “I knew you before you were formed in the womb. I set you apart, I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Every child is a sacred gift from God and deserves a chance to live. Every child conceived is by nature indispensable in God’s loving plan for humankind. God has entrusted us as the guardians of his most precious creations, the born and the unborn. We are the only barrier that stands between God’s will and the darkness of abortion. Who, if not us, is going to speak for those who cannot speak for them- selves? The struggle against abortion is real and has been going on for a long time. Sometimes it feels like an evil that will never go away. People want to get involved in the fight to protect life, but our culture tells Christians to stay out of politics. The evil of abortion flourishes precisely because the abortion industry keeps it hidden. Could we ever have envisioned a day when a law allowing abortion up to the moment of birth would receive a standing ovation as occurred last month with the New York passage of the absurdly named “Reproductive Health Act”. The term “Planned Parenthood” is the exact opposite of parenthood. Their actions reflect the mentality of the Abortion Industry which is a deadened conscience. This corrupt industry uses language such as “clump of cells” or “product of termination” to dis- guise the reality of abortion, the greatest destroyer of family life. Not only can the fight for the right to life be won, it must be won. Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” What greater legacy can any of us have than to save the life of a child? We are hoping that these billboards will help spread the word that the right to life is our God-given right and that there is NO justification for ending life. Whether you are male or female, white, black, brown, Democrat or Republic, everyone is affected by this issue. Since 1973, over 60 million abortions have been performed in the United States. Over 2,500 abortions are performed every day in the United States. The good news is that 650,000 people traveled to Washington, D.C., this past January to march in the fight for the right to life. Participants were holding signs that proclaimed that they are the Pro-Life Generation and that Adoption is the Option.
