Who’s News

Peter Knisely

Movement is joy. At any age,

we can recapture the joy of mov-

ing freely. Even in little ways.

It begins with our mind, our

breathing and our expectation.

As Einstein once said, “Life is

like riding a bicycle. In order to

stay balanced, you have to keep

moving.”

So how do we do that once our

bodies creak and cause us pain?

Music is the powerful ally in

the challenge to stay mobile as

we age. Washing over our brain

and evoking emotion and mem-

ory, music helps us to remember

who we are. Music makes us

want to move, no matter what

our limitations or physical chal-

lenges may be.

Dance paired with music

releases stress and anxiety,

energizing one’s mindset. A

seated dance offers imaginative

ways to improve senior’s muscle

strength, flexibility, coordination

and balance. When we come

together as a class to dance to

music, we mirror our awareness,

witness each other, listen to each

other physically, and beauty is

found in our luminous presence.

We all need ways to reconnect

to our authentic selves. Because

of the limitations of age, seniors

can also do this even from a

chair.

This particular activity has

tremendous value for seniors,

from those living independently

or in assisted living, or even in

memory care communities. It is

often their only opportunity to

integrate stretching, movement,

meditation and dance, all in one

activity. And this integration

leads to liberation. The value for

elders – even more than what

was credited in the study – is

that it gives them an opportu-

nity to move and embrace their

vitality.
