Developing the Next Generation of Leaders
for the Built Environment
A Letter fromDirector Dr. Barbara Jackson
Identifying and developing leadership talent is important for all business enterprises,
and the real estate and construction management industries are no exception. In the
past, most senior executives were clear as to the specific skills and capabilities that were
required to be successful in a leadership role. However, as the real estate, architectural,
engineering and construction industries continue through an unprecedented
transformation, there are new talents and skill sets required to deal with the volatility,
uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity associated with all of the disruptive changes
happening in the marketplace. Changing demographics, ever more advanced
technologies, sustainability, the changing nature of work, and globalization have turned the world of real
estate and project delivery upside down.
Simply stated – traditional leadership skills will not be enough to lead and prosper into the future. According
to a recent study highlighting leadership issues and challenges in the real estate industry,
“…there is a need to develop greater leadership capacity throughout the industry in the art and science of
strategic thinking, planning and decision-making. Being able to understand and deal with increasing
turbulence, and tackle the complexity, risk and uncertainty that come with it, is seen as an immediate and
growing imperative for real estate leaders, both current and aspiring.”
Other needed leadership skills noted in the study
included:
• The need for interpersonal skills, communicating,
listening, and persuading; along with different ways
of thinking about and doing things.
• A greater understanding of the driving forces of
change –social, technological, environmental,
economic, and political – and a facility to forge
resilient strategies in the face of growing complexity,
heightened uncertainty, and variable risk.
• An appreciation that society expects higher standards
of performance, accountability, and transparency.
The Burns School is paying close attention to the
changing dynamics and culture of both the real estate and construction industries, and the need for a changed
“mental model” when it comes to leading those industries. Indeed, leadership is a primary focus of our newly
designed undergraduate, graduate, and executive degree programs. Beginning Spring Quarter 2015, the Burns
School of Real Estate and Construction Management will launch a new graduate level course in
Strategic
Leadership and Integrated Teaming
to address many of the leadership challenges identified in the study
and by the industry at large. The new leadership course is designed around an integrated, systems oriented,
strategic intelligence model applied to the people and practices associated with real estate, project delivery
and construction management. We believe such educational emphasis will give our students an advantage in
the marketplace and better support the companies and organizations they go to work for.
Sincerely,
Barbara (Barb) J. Jackson
