46 / BUILDING DIALOGUE / June 2018 Forum Phi’s Travis Terry – Top 5 for Hospitality Travis Terry Forum Phi, Aspen Designer Approved 1. Process | Hand to Paper My unique precision crafted and elaborate sketches, creat- ed in pencil, ink, watercolor, quash and oil, help relay my vision. When you put your hand to paper an amazing moment is cre- ated. Hand drawings let me display tones and textures clearly while still being able to erase in real time and adjust the drawing to his client’s liking. The creative process and the artist’s mind opens up when I draw. Image: Custom chain mail light fixture and Roll & Hill “Endless” light fixture. www.forumphi.com/mile-high-views 2. Artistry | Custom Focal Pieces I love adding interesting and innovative focal pieces to en- hance a projects design. The balance between a neutral palate and a burst of color inspires me. Whether working on commer- cial or hospitality projects, I believe adding custom millwork, lighting fixtures or interesting art installations have the ability to bring life to any space. Not only do I select these pieces, but also I create themmyself. I have built custom light fixtures, up- holstered avant-garde furniture, and welded accent pieces in order to add innovation and uniqueness to his client’s spaces. Whether in the mountains, by the ocean or downtown, the natural climate is woven through- out each of my design concepts. A space plan should capture a view rather than block it out. Materials should be used that are indicative of the projects location. Ultimately, each of us is a product of our environment. We must use our spaces and loca- tion to express ourselves. The juxtaposi- tion between rich textures and stark finishes is exciting. I invite contrast into my designs. Choosing bright colors, showcasing eccentric artwork or adding bold textiles are thoughtful ways I am able to make a design feel complete and balanced. Natural Materials I love nothing more than a slab of marble or a piece of live edge wood. Being based in Aspen might have a hand in this, but natural substances in a space immediately connect the outdoor with the indoor world. In addition, organic materials are more durable than most, add warmth and are versatile. Of course, it’s all about your personal style, but easy to incorporate in any room throughout your home.
