tilizing 3-D Revit Building Information Modeling technology, OZ Architec-
ture has completed the design of a four-story, 2580-square-meter National
Reference Quality Control Laboratory in Kigali for the Rwanda Ministry of
Health. As the research component on the campus of King Faisal Hospital, the fa-
cility will house biosafety Level 3 laboratories and instrumentation for analyzing
biological samples within a carefully designed containment barrier. The design
team utilized a participatory process, collaborating with staff to create a new
state-of-the-art biosafety laboratory facility and replace an outdated lab housed
in a section of an old hospital across town. While office areas optimize natural
light and ventilation, laboratories are equipped with mechanical ventilation to
ensure safety in a biosafety Level 3 environment. Other sustainable strategies
that have been incorporated include sunshades, water conservation through
rainwater harvesting and solar hot water and photovoltaic power generation.
