The Broomfield Community Center Reconstructions proj- ect involves a complex phased construction effort to build a completely new, expanded facility. “What began in 2015 as a master plan for a multiphased expansion and renovation of Broomfield’s aging municipal community center has evolved – through thoughtful delibera- tion of the City Council – into a full replacement on the same site of the existing facility,” said Brian Erickson, AIA, LEED AP, principal, Davis Partnership Architects. Mindful of Broom- field’s active senior population and a measure of dependence of a robust Meals on Wheels program operating out of the existing facility, the city man- dated that half of the existing facility must remain operation- al until the new replacement facility is complete and opera- tional. “This design constraint was the primary form determinant of a new facility that pushes the limits of site boundaries and natural features including a historic drainage ditch, open space and an adjacent reser- voir,” Erickson said. “To keep a majority of the facility programming func- tional during construction, the senior center wing of the city’s existing community center will be converted to a standalone facility and the rest of the facil- ity will be demolished to pro- vide space for the new facility,” said Tom Bailey, Adolfson & Peterson’s senior project man- ager. According to Erickson, the new 93,124-square-foot com- munity center will offer nearly three times the square footage as the original facility, greatly expanding all aspects of its rec- reation and senior programs and services. A two-court gym- nasium with running track and a natatorium containing four pools featuring a cold water competition pool with elevated seating for 100 spectators are key features of the recreation center. The senior center offers spaces and amenities orga- nized around a central living- room-style prefunction area. Views from the site include portions of the Front Range from second-floor spaces, including the natatorium spec- tator seating and a covered out- door roof deck. Views to the city’s open space to the north are featured from the warm- water pool, therapy pool and hot tub area of the natatorium. “Much beloved views over- looking the adjacent Brunner Reservoir from the existing community room are preserved in the new facility’s new ‘Lake- shore Room,’” Erikcson said. Precast concrete serves as the structural system and exterior envelope of the recreation side of the facility due to tight site constraints and construction schedule advantages. The bal- ance of the facility is composed of structural steel and veneer masonry. Upon completion and occu- pancy of the new facility in August 2020, the final phase will demolish the remain- ing stand-alone senior center wing building to complete the remaining parking lot and site work. The new plan will consoli- date over 100 buildings into 18, providing the community with unprecedented efficiencies. Anew 300,000-square-foot campus will emphasize a higher quality of life for its residents, promote environ- mental stewardship, add progres- sive technology and dramatically improve logistics and energy effi- ciency for the work being done at McMurdo. V OZ Architecture recognized with Fast Co. design award The University of Colora- do Denver Business School and the Jake Jabs Center for Entrepreneurship recently broke ground on the Jake Jabs Event Center, a signature event and educational ame- nity designed for the grow- ing business school’s future needs. Set to open spring 2020, the event center is partially fund- ed by a $12 million gift from American Furniture Ware- house Founder and CEO Jake Jabs. Half of the donation is allocated to the event center, which is an $11 million devel- opment project. The other $6 million Jabs gave will pro- vide long-term support for programming, scholarships, research and more at the Jake Jabs Center for Entrepreneur- ship. The addition to the CU Den- ver Business School building at 1475 Lawrence St. replaces the underutilized courtyard facing the Larimer Street alley. By activating this space, the business school plans to participate in Denver’s func- tional alley movement. JE Dunn Construction is the general contractor while Stantec is the architect. The CU Denver Business School expansion is one of several capital projects under- way as part of the CU Denver Facilities Master Plan. Goals of the 10-year plan include: accommodating enrollment growth, enabling educational excellence, enhancing on- campus student life and inte- grating the universitywith the city of Denver. Other major projects contributing to CU Denver’s campus evolution include the recently opened Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center and recently announced search for a devel- opment partner to build a new first-year residence hall and develop vacant land near the existing Campus Village Apartments. V JE Dunn breaks ground on Jake Jabs Event Center at CU Denver Business School Maxwell Builders, an award- winning Denver-based general contractor with projects through- out the United States, recently completed construction projects for Ross Dress for Less and Les Schwab Tire Center at the Prom- enade at Castle Rock retail center. Including these projects, Maxwell Builders has completed 13 proj- ects at the Promenade at Castle Rock, with three additional proj- ects planned or under construc- tion at this 166-acre shopping, din- ing and entertainment complex on the north side of Castle Rock. Alberta Development Partners is the complex’s master planner. Maxwell Builders complet- ed the 7.5-acre site work and construction package for the 22,500-square-foot Ross store for Alberta Development Partners. Because construction of the Ross store ran concurrently with the other building and foundation work at the Promenade at Castle Rock site, the Maxwell Builders team isolated roof and separation walls. Maxwell Builders also com- pleted construction for the 10,000- sf Les Schwab Tire Center, along with associated site work, at the Promenade at Castle Rock com- plex.
