Sometimes saying no to a request is actually easier than saying yes. If you say no, you give reasons and then move on. But, if you say yes, or you say maybe, then begins the whole process of finding ways to do what you agreed to do. The board has to continually ask, “Can we say yes and still provide for the needs of the community as well as protect the finances of the community?” It‘s a fine balance. It is irresponsible and dishonest to say yes and do nothing to carry out the request. It also shirks our duties to say no when it’s possible and just difficult to accomplish. Thus, we have to ask, “What is the cost we all will share when saying yes to an idea?” We also have to ask, “Is this the best use of the funds we have?” I know you have heard this before, but it’s really true. We have to set aside our personal interests to decide what is best for the community as a whole. I live in a 2-story building, which is different than a 4-story building, which is different than a townhouse. But, we are a community that benefits from everyone and all the components doing well. So, the budget is the plan for saying yes to as many things as we can without unduly burdening the community. We are trying to be as responsible as possible with the funds, the buildings and the grounds that we share. We want to hear your ideas and your frustrations, but please be kind in your communications. We’re your neighbors and your friends. Michele Compton, Board President WINDSOR
