Amgen sells Longmont campus to AstraZeneca for $64.5M

by Jill Jamieson-Nichols

Biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca now holds the keys to Amgen’s 692,000-square-foot campus in Longmont.

AstraZeneca paid $64.5 million for the property at 4000 Nelson Road, which consists of six buildings on approximately 70 acres of land.

The deal also included 158 acres of adjacent land, according to John Winslow of Winslow Property Consultants, who was not involved in the deal. The improvements include a standalone warehouse and four lab, production and office facilities interconnected with a central utility building.

AstraZeneca said in a statement the facility will support existing operations at its nearby Boulder site, which it bought from Amgen in September 2015.

“The Longmont facility adds to our expanding biologics commercial manufacturing capabilities as we prepare for our exciting future biologic medicines,” said Darren Dasburg, Boulder Manufacturing Center site director. “Integrating this site into our existing operations network will provide AstraZeneca and Medimmune, our global biologics research and development arm, with flexible biological manufacturing capacity to quickly bring new innovation treatments to patients.”

The company said the site will be staffed over time, according to business needs, as its pipeline matures and expansions become necessary.

“AstraZeneca’s acquisition of the Amgen campus represents a significant long-term opportunity for job creation in Longmont,” said Jessica Erickson, president and CEO of the Longmont Economic Development Partnership. Over what time period and how many employees will work there is uncertain.

At its peak, the former Amgen campus employed nearly 1,200 people. Amgen maintains a small production presence there.

Eric Dienstbach of Binswanger, who listed the campus for sale, said he was not at liberty to discuss the transaction.
