Haselden Construction has stepped up as a 2015 A Precious Child “Fill a Backpack” Partner and is hosting a backpack and school supply collection drive through Friday, Aug. 7. Individuals are encouraged to drop off new backpacks and school supplies at Haselden’s Centennial office, 6950 S. Potomac St., to help A Precious Child, a local nonprofit, reach its goal of sending 7,750 disadvantaged Colorado children back to school prepared and ready for success. “This is a fabulous idea and a great opportunity for all of us to participate in,” stated Haselden CEO Ed Haselden. The “Fill a Backpack” program, one of eight programs offered through A Precious Child, distributes backpacks to children in need through agency partners in the Denver metro area. Partners include schools, health and human services departments, churches, nonprofit organizations, foster homes, safe homes and homeless shelters. In 2014 A Precious Child distributed 7,500 backpacks and has set its sights on serving even more kids this year. “Economically disadvantaged students have a very difficult time with succeeding in school,” said Carina Martin, CEO and Founder of A Precious Child. “One of the most unfortunate results of their economic struggles is that students who live in poverty often do not have the basic essentials they need in order to be prepared and engaged. Ensuring that children are properly clothed and have the necessary supplies to participate in school can have a dramatic effect because it helps children stay in school, promotes learning and promotes positive self-esteem.” For more information about A Precious Child and the Fill a Backpack program visit APreciousChild.org.
