She was keeping track of national weather, not just local. The first time she became aware of a hurricane threat- ening our area, she was on the phone lightning fast. “Gramma Mary Beth, are you going to ‘vac-u-ate from the hurricane?” “I will wait to see where it is going,” I told her. “It might change direction.” “But you should get away from it,” she insisted. “If it comes my way, I will.” I explained how storms could change direction based on weather patterns. “You mean a front,” she corrected me. Never under- estimate an avid preschool weather fan. “Yes, a front. Sometimes a front will move at the last minute and change the hurricane’s course. If I try to evacuate too soon, by mistake I might go to where it is headed. I will be all ready to leave if it turns my way.” She was mollified by my response. “Okay, but don’t wait too long.” Hurricanes, tornadoes, straight line winds, severe thunderstorms—you name it, she warns me about it. She’s even recorded weather reports in her back yard and submitted them to The Weather Channel. And yes, she was wearing her Weather Channel shirt when she filmed it. One morning, the call came before 8:00 a.m. as she called to warn me about the line of severe thunder- storms heading my way. She couldn’t talk for long be- cause the school bus was coming. Now that she’s eight, there are other demands on her time. But she made sure to get the warning in. Her interest in the science of weather thrills me, but it is her loving thoughts of me and keeping me safe which warm my heart and make me smile. Sorry, net- work folks.
