It also received the Design Honor Award -- one of four given in 2020 -- from the chapter’s design jury. The Crosby Arboretum holds 64 acres on our main site with three miles of trails that journey through Woodland, Aquatic, and Savanna exhibits. It’s also a great place to get outdoors for recreation. Our trails are spectacular in the spring months, with blooms from the yellow pitcher plants, called “buttercups” by locals, mountain laurel, “honeysuckle” azaleas, native Iris species, and more. The Arboretum is known for our several large pitcher plant bogs, that are stunning when in full bloom. Our exhibits educate the visiting public about the value of these unique Coastal Plain ecosystems. Although there are many visitors from garden clubs, Master Gardener groups, and university groups because our unique focus on ecological design and regional flora, one can also attend a variety of programs and events – from herb garden programs, to Bug Fest, botany field walks and gardening programs, to arts and crafts days for the entire family and there is so much more! Bi-annually, the Arboretum holds a large fall and spring plant sale with hard-to-find native plants, with plant experts on hand to help you choose the best species to prosper in your home landscape. There are also smaller sales throughout the year like the Arbor Day plant sale in February and we’ve added a Pollinator Plant sale in May. A wealth of gratitude is paid to the Green Team volunteers who maintain propagation and growth in the green house to help the perpetual plant sale on the Visitors Center deck carry on daily. While the Mississippi native landscape and how to maintain it is a focus of The Crosby Arboretum, the net has been cast further to show a wider demographic the many benefits of the site. Fitness has become a priority, with the addition of Saturday morning Yoga on the Pavilion and our 5K Through the Forest that will be held on April 17th. You can register by clicking on the event on our event calendar at www.crosbyarboretum.msstate.edu . Runners and walkers are welcome to participate.
