18 SOUTHERN SENIOR MAGAZINE | Spring 2021 A s you’re cruising down I-59, after crossing over the Mississippi state line, you’ll see an expanse of wooded area. Some of it is personal property, some county property, and some state. Many may already know about the Crosby Arboretum in Picayune but if you don’t, you’ll keep on cruising without giving it a glance. Slow down and take Exit 4 and just follow the signs to this nationally recognized garden!! The Crosby Arboretum is an award-winning public garden that opened to the public in 1986, and in 1997 became part of Mississippi State University and operated by the MSU Extension Service. People travel from around the country to see the famous E. Fay Jones structure, Pinecote Pavilion. Mr. Jones didn’t stop his vision with Pinecote. His entire plan includes additional buildings including an administrative and education facility as well as various stations throughout the site that blend with the landscape while keeping with the ar- chitectural stylings of the Pinecote Pavilion. Re- cently, the Arboretum added the Rosen Pavilion and Mirror Perch Bridge as site landmarks. The Mirror Perch Bridge, in its infancy of completion, has won two architectural awards. The Mississippi chapter of the American Institute of Architects recognized the bridge with its prestigious Sambo Mockbee Spirit of Place Award, which is given to one project in the state each year for design of materials.
