6 SOUTHERN SENIOR MAGAZINE | Summer 2020 Turmeric can be found in most kitchen cabinets as a spice used in curry. This ground root is a member of the ginger family with a light aroma and bright orange color. The benefits of curcumin found in turmeric are worth discussing with your physician. This orange spice is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that can increase one’s quality of life by aiding in mobility, mental clarity, and mood without the negative side effects of manufac- tured drugs. Several studies have shown that turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties reduce pain related to rheumatoid and osteoarthri- tis. This is great news for those who abused their bodies when they were younger. Turmeric supplements have been found ef- fective in the treatment of stiff joints, muscle aches, loss of flex- ibility, and fatigue. “According to the Arthritis Foundation, several studies have found turmeric to be effective at reducing joint inflammation and pain, with one of the studies even find- ing curcumin to be better at reducing pain and swelling in pa- tients with rheumatoid arthritis than diclofenac, an NSAID that is commonly prescribed for people with RA.” For those who prefer a natural treatment plan, turmeric may be the answer. Lack of mobility and pain, if left untreated, can lead to dis- couragement, inactivity and melancholy. As we age, memory seems to cloud, aches and pains begin to arise, blood pressure climbs, and cholesterol rises. Curcumin’s antioxidant properties prevent the bundling of beta-amyloid and aids in bilirubin production which protects the brain from free radicals. Alzheimer’s disease and brain fog occur when these bundles accumulate in brain cells. Often, this leads to frustra- tion and depression. Curcumin found in turmeric functions in the same manner as a prescription antidepressant; however, the list of side effects from curcumin is minute. When used as a spice or in doses under 500mg/day, no side ef- fects have been noted. However, when extremely high doses were tested, allergic response, upset stomach, and yellow stools were reported as side effects. Turmeric may inhibit the blood clotting process, so it is best to discontinue use two weeks prior to any surgery to be safe. For diabetics, caution should be used when using turmeric, due to its ability to lower blood glucose level. With any remedy we put into our bodies, it is wise to do your research and consult with your physician. Turmeric for many retirees, has given them mobility without pain or the cost of expensive prescription drugs; clarity of mind. *National Center for complementary and Integrative Health, December 2016 * https://www.healthdiaries.com/eatthis/20-health-benefits-of-turmeric.html *US national Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2637808/ By Alicia Anderson Certified Personal Trainer Turmeric for Seniors S
