Page 18 CANDIDATE FOR TRIBAL COUNCIL LORI KNIGHTON 2020 is a year to reflect and prioritize where we as an individual and a people want to become. My heart goes out to all of you who have lost a dear loved one. I personally am missing many smiles that brought me comfort, joy, and laughter. And to all who have endured physical, mental, or spiri- tual discomfort during these unique times; Please remember you are BEAUTIFUL and STRONG! My name is Lori Moore Knighton. Everything that I have written in my previous two platforms for a council seat still has not changed, I AM HERE FOR YOU . This campaign I want to emphasize this message: YOU are a member of the Federally recognized Colorado River Indian Tribes. YOU are NOT just a number. YOU MATTER !!! A generic definition of what a Tribal council is the following: the tribes nine elected council which exercises all the legislative and executive powers of the tribe. What is power to you? I have a feeling that my definition of Power is not the popular one. Power comes from a higher source that we need to humble ourselves and embrace. We as four, unique tribes come from people who had righteous power at one time. We walked a resilient path. No one was left behind. It was a sustainable family society. Unfortunately, somewhere down the line we are beginning to forget how to fish. “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. TEACH him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Now that is POWER. My goal is to bring us back to a sustainable society. Economic – Diversity is key. Look into all potential areas of economic development. Not just one. We can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives from economic growth. As, long as it is obtained ethi- cally and distributed equally. Environmental – Our water is life. It should never be put on the back burner. Management of our other natural resources. We need to be continually proactive. Social – This encompasses so many areas that we need to build upon. The short list would entail: Education (all ages), law and order, social services, family-oriented activ- ities. Provide all resources to our people to partake of what is available. Promote physical and men- tal health and well-being. We need to respect, protect, and promote our human rights. There is so much that needs to be done in other areas of our reservation. It will take desire and effort. It will not be achieved over night. Tribal Council is not a 9 to 5, 5 days a week appointment. I am here to serve. YOU are my appointment. Previously I gave a generic definition of Tribal Council. My definition encompasses much more than what I have written. What is your definition of a Tribal Council? It takes all types to make this world and our reservation function. Many new personalities are wanting to make a difference. We need to find council mem- bers who focus on the present (YOU) and our future generations. SELFISHNESS has no place in a Tribal Council. A council that will promote progress, self-reliance, and in return there will be happiness and we will be a strong people who can survive during unpredictable events in the future. If I am blessed enough to become a member of the Tribal council, I would ask that you come and introduce yourself to me. So, we can grow together. Accomplishments.
