A28 April 2022 • Community • www.lwca.com Has Society Gone Too Far with Their Expectations on Beauty and Aging Women? The unrealistic standard of beauty placed on women has been a thorn in the side of women for decades upon decades. Women have had to align themselves with a false definition of beauty defined by mass media and beauty experts. However, in recent weeks with the launch of new television shows such as And Just Like That, Big Little Lies and The Crown there has been controversial chatter examining the beauty of mature women on the small screen. Sarah Jessica Parker, the star of And Just Like That was immediately compared to her younger character in the hit show Sex and the City . Critics quickly pointed out the aging Parker questioning if the next chapter of the hit show could measure up due to the aging of the women. Parker quickly responded on her Instagram stating that “There’s so much misogynist chatter in response to us that would never happen to a man.” The hypocrisy that society loves the gray in a man’s beard but gasps at the gray in a woman’s hair. At what point will society be accepting that there is a chapter of life in between 35 and 75. Women are evolving at every phase in their lives. With this evolution, there is a piqued desire for middle-aged women to be portrayed in the realities of that particular phase of life. There is an out- cry for the raw reality of aging-women to be not only be accepted but to be embraced and seen as beautiful. Shifts at various phases of life should be celebrated. The overbearing demand for women to present themselves as their younger selves at middle-age presents a fallacy that aging does not represent beauty. It’s unrealistic to not grow and evolve mentally and emotionally but remain youthful in appearance. The love/hate relationship that most women experience with aging is prompted by the societal norms that indicate that once a woman reaches a certain age she is no longer desirable. That is a lie! Experienced, established, self-controlled, intelligent, well-versed women even with a few wrinkles are desirable. If not, why are older women called cougars? Aging women are beautiful and confident because they have experienced life. Don’t allow society to define your beauty. You are wonderfully made and gorgeous! What’s the Hype About Collagen? The cosmetic industry tends to come out each year with a beauty revelation of the latest must-have, need it right now beauty product. Most women are self-proclaimed beauty junkies with cabinets and bathroom drawers filled to the brink with product after product in search of the Fountain of Youth. You can recall a few years back when Coconut Oil was deemed the “only oil” you will ever need. Then it was “don’t forget to get a face cream with Retinol and Vitamin C.” You remember the whole retinol campaign that went on for a good year? The year 2022 is the year of collagen. Collagen is the new Vitamin C. You can’t be on social media or look at your favorite streaming network without some mention of this “wonder powder.” Celebrities fromGwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep and Glenn Close have endorsed Collagen as the non- invasive Botox. Sounds good… But is the hype about Collagen more smoke and mirrors as just the latest beauty fad? Let’s explore. Collagen refers to a family of proteins that are the primary structural component of connective tissues, such as skin and cartilage, according to Yale University. The substance makes up about a third of all the protein in the human body, more than any other type of protein in the body by mass. There are 28 different types of collagens, each type categorized based on its amino acid composition. About 90% of the collagen in the body is type 1, which is found in the skin, tendons, internal organs and organic parts of bone, according to Healthline. However, by the time we reach 28, our bodies stop producing collagen. Just think back to your late 20s, you can recall that you started to experience first body aches and the first double look in the mirror to question changes in the skin. Yup, Collagen is the blame! But before you get up in arms, just know that what was once lost can be found again! There are so many benefits to incorporating collagen into your daily beauty ritual. It improves the hydration of the skin and reduces roughness and increases elasticity which can diminish the signs of aging. Collagen can also aid in gut health due to amino acids glycine and proline. Another great benefit, collagen helps to build and restore cartilage in your bones! Yes, it could help lessen the body aches! Could collagen be thee Fountain of Youth? That is a strong claim but with all of the information given, it seems that the hype is real!
