A8 December 2021 • Community • www.lwca.com The mission of the Leisure World Foundation is to provide charitable relief to help meet the needs of elderly, disabled and distressed persons in Mesa and nearby areas, including the Leisure World community. Since 1996, the foundation has fulfilled its mission with many volunteers and a lot of passion. And we are still going strong! As a nonprofit organization, the Leisure World Foundation gives 95% of money raised to benefit worthy causes; only 5% of all donations are used for administrative purposes. The generosity of donors has benefitted Leisure World residents in need by providing services like the Music Therapy classes for those suffering from a form of dementia and their caregivers, and the Outreach Office, which assists residents in difficult emergency situations. The annual Premiere Lecture Series is also supported with foundation funds. They are free and showcase informational and entertaining speakers during the fall and winter seasons. Participants greatly enjoy these presentations. Donation Options How can a Leisure World resident get involved and make a difference? Donations are always accepted for specific or unrestricted giving. It is the time of year when donating may make sense. IRA: Individuals 70-1/2-years-old or older can give directly from their IRA to qualified charities without paying federal income tax on distribution. This option provides tax savings to donors even if they do not itemize deductions. The funds must be transferred directly to the Leisure World Foundation. Please consult with a tax advisor. In Memory Of: Gifts in honor of or in memory of an individual may be made at any time. They are promptly acknowledged by the foundation. Various projects have benefitted from these funds, such as the Fitness Center, the tennis and pickleball complex and the Leisure World Library. Friends’ Endowment Fund: This fund was established in 2013 to provide long-term stability to the foundation. It gives residents the opportunity to make a lasting impact on our community. This permanent fund, with an initial goal of one million dollars, is invested for long- term growth. Up to 5% of the fund’s earnings may be withdrawn in any year, and the money is used to carry out the foundation’s mission. The fund is currently nearing the half-a-million-dollar mark. A donor form is also provided below. These can be returned to the front desk in the Administration Building. Double Library Fundraising Rewards! The Leisure World Foundation Board voted unanimously at our October board meeting to participate in the Leisure World Library’s annual fundraising event. The foundation will match the first $2,000 raised in this annual campaign. This occurs in February or March each year. Many library patrons have appreciated the collection of reading material available. The potential of adding $4,000 to the library budget will make a huge impact! “One of our library board members will speak at each of the district meetings to encourage giving,” says Leisure World Library Board President Diane Tyndal. “We will also put a special bookmark in all the newer books during February and March requesting users’ donations.” “The Foundation is excited to match the donations given to the library this coming year,” says Leisure World Foundation Board President Donna Bailey. “Reading is fun for all ages and keeps us young!” Hot Tropical Nights!
