Divots, Ball Marks and Tires By Shane Romebsburg his month, I will be addressing three common issues many golfers experience on the greens. Two of these are on course conditions and the other will bene t your golf cart. 1. Repairing Divots: How many of you have hit a perfect drive, down the middle of the fairway and when you pull up to it, the ball is lying in a divot? Was the divot bare? Was is it half- lled with sand? Having your ball come to rest in a divot is bad enough, but to nd it in an improperly lled divot is even worse! When repairing your divot, the proper technique is to pour a healthy amount of divot mix into the scar that has been made and tamp it down with your foot so that the mix is level with the ground. 2. Correctly Fixing Ball Marks: We announce every shotgun to please x your ball marks on the greens in the hopes that everyone is paying attention. en why can you still see old ball marks or brown spots and bumps on the greens? Repairing these little depressions is very important. Equally important is doing it the right way. ere are many well-meaning golfers who do “repair” the pitch marks, only to do so incorrectly. Incorrectly “repaired” ball marks take twice as long to heal as those repaired correctly. e rst step is to take your repair tool and insert the prongs into the turf at the edge of the depression. Do not insert the prongs into the depression itself. e next step is to push the edge of the mark toward the center, using your repair tool in a gentle twisting motion. is is the step that most golfers mess up. Many golfers insert the tool at an angle, so the prongs are beneath the center of the crater and use the tool to push the bottom of the ball mark back up even with the surface. Do not do this! Pushing the bottom of the depression upward tears the roots and kills the grass. 3. Check Golf Cart Tire Pressure: Lastly, have you noticed your golf car is using more battery life during an 18-hole round that normal? e charge was full when you started but was below half when you nished? Check your tire pressure. Under-in ated tires require the battery to work harder to make the car go. Your tire pressure should be no lower than 22 PSI. Be mindful of these three items for a smoother and fun gol ng experience! -Shane Romesburg is Head Golf Pro at Leisure World. HOT TIPS Larry Pearson Aces Hole-in-One! After 50 years on the links, Leisure World resident Larry Pearson hit his first-ever hole-in-one on Sunday, October 17. According to Golf Digest and the National Hole-in-One Association, a hole-in-one is a rare feat — one that most golfers never achieve in their career. The odds of an amateur golfer on a par-3 hitting a tee shot into the hole is one out of every 12,750 times. Larry was golfing with Mike Cole and Kim Cassese, who witnessed the shot on Heron Lakes hole number 2. Congratulations, Larry! Learn Golf with the Rookie League!
