The pain of the person’s absence and memories of past Thanksgivings and Christmases can be too hard to endure. Many suffer in silence and remain isolated. Some even avoid social interaction at all costs. Grief can be very unpredictable. One moment, you feel that you are in control, and the next, you are overwhelmed with feelings of loss. Know that this is okay. Be kind to yourself and accept however long it will take to heal. Here are four tips to help you navigate this season while grieving: 1. Set Boundaries: You have an idea of your limits. You do not have to attend all events. Do what feels comfortable. If you are at ease in larger crowds, attend these events. If a more intimate gathering is more suitable, than participate in those. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. 2. Delegate Responsibility: If you normally plan holiday festivities and a meal, you should give yourself the option to delegate these responsibilities to your loved ones. You may find it hard to continue with your norms, so ask those around you for help. You do not have to do this alone! 3. Honor Your Loved One: If the holidays are big events for your family, it may be helpful to incorporate old traditions into your festivities that honor the memory of your loved one. Although the individual may not physically be here with you, their memory will live on forever! 4. Create New Traditions : Creating new traditions can be healing. Know that making new memories does not mean that you are forgetting old ones. Release any feelings of guilt and enjoy the holidays with your family and friends. Loss is always difficult — especially during the holidays. Remember to be patient and loving with yourself. Lean on your family and friends to get through this difficult time. And always take comfort knowing that even though your loved one may be gone, their spirit and memory will live on forever! Dealing With Loss During the Holidays
