By Stormi Kime Vasquez Welcome to 2021! If you are like most people, you probably cannot wait to say goodbye to 2020! ankfully, the new year has arrived! For some, a new year may mean resolutions with health, making a better e ort to stay in touch with family and friends, or doing some home improvement projects. But some of you may have something else in mind like adding some pizazz to your golf car or even acquiring a new one. Here are some things to consider when redesigning a new or existing golf car. Read on! Establish Your Budget First and foremost, it is important to know what you are willing to spend. is will allow you to navigate the redesign process much easier and di erentiate your “wants” verses your “needs.” If you already have a golf car, your budget will be notably less than someone who does not. Apache Main believes that some of the best cars for redesign are those that are former golf course eet cars. ese late model cars (3- to 4-years old) can be acquired at a reasonable rate. ey are generally very basic with a fantastic “canvas” of sorts. Although they are simple in appearance, their working components employ current engineering and technology with more powerful motors and controllers (48-volt verses 36-volt). ey also have smaller but highly e cient chargers. On average, a former eet car is between $5,000-6,500, depending on the age and type (lead acid vs. lithium) of batteries. Most former course cars are from one of the three major golf car manufacturers, E-Z-GO, Club Car or Yamaha. Referred to as “ e Big ree,” these golf car brands have a plethora of parts and accessory manufacturers in the aftermarket with readily available products at competitive prices. Appearance Upgrades Other than the golf car itself, there are ve basic upgrades or enhancements that can make an incredible impact on the appearance of a golf car. Keep in mind that these modi cation options primarily impact the appearance of the golf car and not its performance . Although some enhancements do both, the focus is on how the car looks. ree items that can completely transform a car are paint, upholstery and wheels. Paint Unlike a standard vehicle, golf cars are painted in pieces — the front and rear cowls. Consequently, a color change consists of the expense for the actual painting and its disassembly and reassembly. And when it comes to painting a golf car, the world is your oyster! Similarly, but less expensive, is a color change by acquiring new front and rear cowls. is is more limiting in color palate but is less expensive and can have some custom pin striping applied to enhance the look. Upholstery Upholstery is another area that can substantially impact the appearance of a golf car. Textured vinyl, plush fabrics, creative stitching, contour seat-shaping, are all options when re-inventing the look of a golf car’s seats. Wheels When it comes to wheels, the size of the wheel and corresponding tire will provide an enhanced appearance. It will also marginally impact the performance of the car with larger wheels and increase the speed of the car by a few miles an hour. e maximum wheel size allowed on a golf car varies by make and model. An alternative to adding larger wheels is adding wheel covers, which come in many colors and designs at a fraction of the cost! Lights and Mirrors e remaining two basics of a redesign are lights and mirrors. ese are essential additions (plus a horn!) if a person wants to license their golf car for use on city streets. Standard light kits include headlights, taillights and brake lights. Upgraded kits o er turn signals, hazard lights, horn and options of LED bulbs. A ve-panel mirror is the most popular option for a mirror since it serves as both a rear view and two side mirrors, giving multiple views from the back of the cart. Options Galore! Your redesign can include features of 2021 cars such as lockable dashes in various nishes, adding a rear seat, a new canopy top with or without a stereo system, undercarriage LED lighting and so much more! Of course, the end price creeps up the more a person dreams! But you only live once, right? If you can dream it, we can do it!
