Leisure World News

A10 November 2018 • Community • www.lwca.com By Richard Mack Fall brings many community festivals and events, including our very own Arts and Crafts Fair and Book Sale. The Leisure World Library Board and volunteers wish you all a happy Thanksgiving and hope you enjoy some of the seasons many events. Semi-Annual Book Sale: The Leisure World Library’s Fall Semi-Annual Book Sale is on Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Rec. 1, in conjunction with the LW Arts and Crafts Fair. You will find the book sale in its traditional location in the Promenade. Our patrons will find this year’s offerings particularly enticing, with a large selection and many almost-new books suitable for holiday gift giving. Also noteworthy this year is the large number of “coffee table books” in fine condition. As usual, the prices will be appealingly low. You can’t go wrong. I wish you good buys! No Mini Book Sale: No mini book sale will be held in November. The next mini book sale will be held at the Library on Thursday, December 13 from noon until 1:30 p.m. In Memory: It is with profound sadness that we note the passing of Library Board Member Nancy Witts. Nancy held the position of Volunteer Chair. She was devoted to the Library. We will sorely miss her competence, enthusiasm and amiable spirit. Volunteers: The first volunteer workshop of the season is on Wednesday, November 14 at 9 a.m. in the Queen Card Room at Rec. 1. All volunteers are required to attend workshops, which focus on Library practices and procedures. See you there! Donated Books: The Library is always thankful for the donation of books in good condition. One of the pillars of financial support for the Library is the revenue we receive from our periodic book sales. Donated books do not go to waste. Books in good condition may be included in the Library’s collection, sold at one of the Library’s periodic book sales or donated to outside organizations. It’s all win-win! Thank you. Book Review: What if, in this new world of drones and computer viruses, firewalls and hackers, the greatest threat to society came not from technology but an ancient cryptic document created in the Dark Ages? This document, known as the Voynich Manuscript, is believed to have been written in cryptophasia (twin language), decipherable only by certain twins whose lineage connects them with ancient Romania. This startling theme is the backdrop of “The Sixth Day, A Brit in the FBI Thriller” by veteran authors Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison. When several major political figures die mysteriously, including one on the steps of 10 Downing Street, it is suspected that killer drones may have been responsible. What is the motive for these murders? Who could manage such targeted killing in the heart of Britain? Clearly a national emergency, the Covert Eyes team is tasked to investigate. Team members Nicholas Drummond and his wife Michaela (“Mike”), aided by their computer guru nephew Adam Pearce and cryptographer Dr. Isabella Marin, gradually set their sights on cybersecurity genius Roman Ardelean. Ardelean, a descendant of Vlad the Impaler, the brutal Romanian king whom the myth of Dracula is based, believes that the Voynich document contains the secret cure for his severely ill twin brother’s blood disorder. He will stop at nothing to obtain the document and secure its translation. As can be expected in a thriller, the action culminates in a violent and explosive conclusion. The lives and limbs of the entire team hang in the balance until the very end. I enjoyed this cliff hanger. Coulter and Ellison are both bestselling authors. Coulter has written over 80 novels, including the “Brit in the FBI” international thriller series, co-written with J.T. Ellison. Ellison writes dark psychological thrillers, featuring Nashville Homicide Lt. Taylor Jackson and medical examiner Dr. Samantha Owens. -Richard Mack is Publicity Chair of the Leisure World Library Board.
