When he arrived in the United

only to be turned down because he

didn’t speak English. His dreams of

becoming a Soldier were crushed. He

For the next two years,Torres stud-

ing books, watching TV and listening

to the radio. One day he passed by the

another shot.A couple ofmonths later,

Torres enlisted in theArmy and attend-

Memorial Day is a special day

when we take time to honor and

remember the more than one mil-

lion men and women who died in

the serviceofourcountry.Formerly

called Decoration Day, Memo-

rial Day is a day of remembrance,

a chance for some to halt their busy

schedules to give thanks to those

who gave all.

In keeping with that tradition,

Maj.Gen. PatWhite, commanding

general, 1stArmored Division and

FortBliss, and Soldiers assigned to

1stBrigadeCombatTeam, 1stAD,

hosted theMemorialDay Ceremo-

ny at the Fort BlissNationalCem-

“Aswe take this day to remem-

ber our country’s fallen, and look

back through our history to honor

all those that gave their lives for

our freedom and our liberty, let us

recommit ourselves and remind all

Americans of the true meaning of

MemorialDay,”White said. “I can-

not emphasize enough how our ob-

servance of this day, understanding

and respecting its truemeaning, is

so important to all of us, ourwon-

Sometimes all it takes is one unexpected

emergency–a sick familymember,amajorcar

issue or even problems with pay to cripple a

budget.ForSoldiers, their familiesand retirees,

theArmyEmergencyRelief fund canbe awel-

The2017AER fundraising seasonofficially

began Wednesday, and Fort Bliss Financial

Readiness opened the season Feb. 23 during

“Ourgoal thisyear, for thecampaignseason,

March1st throughMay15th, is$300,000,”said

AnaHernandez,FortBlissFinancialReadiness

programmanager. “Iwant to recoverwhatwe

issue in grants sowe can continue to help Sol-

diers that aremost in need. I thinkwe can do

it. I justwant tomake surewe continue in the

traditionofSoldiers helpingSoldiers.”

Last year,AER assisted some 45,000 Sol-

diers across the Army. At Fort Bliss, service

members received$4.3million in funds.

“TheAER campaign is two-fold.One is to

fundraise, the other is to increase awareness,”

Hernandez said. “Projct officers from brigade

down to company level have been trained al-

ready.”
