Henry County Times

Special to the Times Are you having problems with your septic system and need as- sistance to repair or replace it? The Henry County Community Development Department has CDBG (Community Develop- ment Block Grant) funds avail- able to assist low-to moderate income residents with repairs to or replacement of their failing septic systems. Homeowners who meet the CDBG income requirements can apply to have their septic tank re- paired through a forgivable loan program. Signs of a failing septic system may include water pooling in the yard; wet, mushy ground; septic backing up in your home; or a foul odor coming from your yard. If you or someone you know is having issues with a septic tank system and would like to apply for assistance under the CDBG program, or for additional infor- mation, please see Stacey Wal- lace in the Community Develop- ment Department at the Henry County Administration Building or call 470-588-1590 and leave a message. The primary goal of the CDBG is to develop and strengthen vi- able urban communities by pro- viding decent housing and suitable living environments principally for low and moderate income persons and/or house- holds. Last Week’s Picture Henry County As It Was Photo courtesy of True Southerners A Pictorial History of Henry County, Georgia by Gene Morris, Jr. Gene wrote, “The Schaefer- Stewart Building was constructed in 1882. In this picture McDo- nough looks like a scene out of the old west. The building extended from the west side of the present day Courthouse toAtlanta Street. The two story porch across the front was a favorite part of McDo- nough architecture until it was removed by the Henry County Sup- ply Company when they remodeled the building in 1920. The tree in the foreground is a mulberry.” McDonough Mayor Billy Copeland correctly identified the photo and added that the build- ing housed the first bank, post office and newspaper in McDo- nough. The Henry County Times days, he said, many of whom are outside Henry County. “I was amazed at the response we got.” A film production company has inquired about using the build- ing in the latter part of August, which will affect the museum’s opening only slightly but could be a boon for Evans as well as the community at large. “[Film shoots] bring in a lot of outside revenue for local busi- nesses,” he said. “A 160-person crew has got to eat somewhere. The merchants love it because the film company will pay them for the inconvenience even if their store is not in the shot.” A variety of classes and events are a possibility for the building, all of which brings revenue into the city from outside, Evans pointed out. That fits with the primary goal of the museum, which is to bring people from the hotels surrounding McDo- nough into the downtown area.
