By Jason A. Smith Times Correspondent The Henry Arts Alliance is set to begin its Youth Orchestra les- sons program at the Fairview Recreation Center in Stock- bridge. Parents and students are invited to the program’s introduction Wednesday, and the first rehearsal is set for August 15. Currently, 17 children are enrolled for violin, viola & cello lessons once a week for 30 weeks, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., said Jerry Hesselink, Alliance board member and director of Henry for Music. “We have all the donated instruments for this first session, spending necessary grant funds from Heritage Community Foundation for repairs,” he said. “However, to contract the best professional teachers for our children, we must raise some separate funding.” The Arts Alliance, said Hesselink, has established a GoFundMe account to provide a teacher with adequate pay for the program. “Our goal is set at $3,000,” he said. “We have raised $75 at this time, plus $300 from other pri- vate individuals.” Hesselink further emphasized a need to enhance options for music education locally. “Most people don’t know that with 10 public high schools in Henry County, six have no stringed instruments being taught, so the majority of those students will be precluded from ever having the challenge or opportunity to reach the sym- phony,” he said. “It is my under- standing there no plans to widen the musical arts efforts in our schools. Henry for Music, little by little, is working to provide children with the opportunity for a quality music education.” For more information, e-mail henryformusic@aol.com.
