Burnette Karate and Fitness Studio in McDonough, recently held karate and self-defense class- es for kids at AFriend’s House. At one point as many as 15 kids par- ticipated in the free summer-long program. A Friend’s House is a home for abused, neglected and abandoned children in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services. B.J. Monti, an investigator for Henry County District Attorney’s Office, oversaw the self-defense course. Monti, a 21-year veteran of law enforcement, is also a training officer specializing in use of force, firearms, active shooter, and defensive tactics and the owner of Survival Tactics Urban Defense. He attributes a measure of his success to the discipline and skills he gained through mar- tial-arts training. Amber Davis works for the McDonough Police Department and assists Monti with the classes and coordinating seminars. Davis said the self-defense program was a “good, positive experience” for the young participants, and that several of them are continuing karate during the school year. “The kids are great,” said Davis. “They were willing to learn and gave 110 percent each day. They know I work for the police depart- ment, and they know B.J. is a law- enforcement officer. Building a trusting relationship like we have over this summer will be some- thing I think will stick with them for a long time.” Davis encouraged others in the community, and particularly law- enforcement agencies, to become involved with shelters like A Friend’s House on a consistent basis. “If you want a better tomorrow, it starts with our children today,” she said. “Lead by example.
