By Monroe Roark Times Correspondent Business is picking up for Henry County’s Building and Plan Review Department, to the point that officials have deter- mined a satellite office is neces- sary to continue providing need- ed services efficiently. The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted at its March 6 regular meeting to approve a proposal that will pro- vide equipment for that office at Fire Station 6 in the Fairview area on the northern end of the county. The resolution provides for the funding of five laptop computers and accessories. The move was necessary to “ensure quality and excellence in all aspects of building and devel- opment permitting and inspec- tions,” according to a staff report, by “processing applications in a timely and efficient manner” and “providing thorough building, development and zoning compli- ance inspections for all construc- tion projects.” An overall increase in activity in the Building Plan and Review Department along with limited current office space were cited as reasons for this action. The costs involved will be funded through the department’s revenue. In other business, the board approved three separate public safety measures totaling just over $374,000. The purchase of self- contained breathing apparatus and other equipment for the Henry County Fire Department from Municipal Emergency Services was approved at a cost of $122,217.04 after the initial funding was approved last August. Also approved for the Henry County Police Depart- ment were the purchase of Panasonic Toughbooks for nine Ford pursuit utility vehicles and 10 Dodge Chargers for $69,991.63. The final motion was for the purchase of other equipment to outfit those HCPD vehicles at a cost of $181,888. Additional funding for trans- portation services for the elderly and disabled through the Georgia Department of Human Services was accepted officially by the board. The DHS’ Coordinated Transportation System “provides transportation services for eligi- ble people to attend and partici- pate in vital services,” according to a staff report. They participate in programs offered by Senior Services, Developmental Dis- abilities, Mental Health Clinics, Department of Family and Children Services, and the Department of Labor. The DHS is obligating $32,497.97 in additional funds to the FY2018 contract, bringing the revised total approved amount to $731,381,89.
